Could it just be stress coloration? Apparantly they pale when water conditions are less than ideal . Id say fatten him up and wait to see what happens with the color , it might brighten up.

mine always grew in places where there was less intense light , lower rocks and shaded areas first . I took some time for it to take off in high light areas .

Astrea snails , blue legged hermits , cerith snails , and a fighting conch are great additions to the reef I usually add a few at a time . Astreas and ceriths are hermit proof in my experience .
