Custom tank hoods & weight...

This is probably the most daft of questions, but do those those beautiful, custom wooden canopies, rest totally on the walls of an aquarium? If so, how much weight can they (glass walls) actually support?
Designing a top for my lights is obviously next on my reef "to do" list ...
