Custom tank hoods & weight...

This is probably the most daft of questions, but do those those beautiful, custom wooden canopies, rest totally on the walls of an aquarium? If so, how much weight can they (glass walls) actually support?
Designing a top for my lights is obviously next on my reef "to do" list ...

I am not sure what weight the sides can hold but I built my own hood.. without fear.. I assume so long as your not putting 100lbs on there you should be ok   Hoods weight very little in comparison to what it can probably hold. Since most of the weight is simply transfered down the sides and into your stand.

Like chad said, you really don't have to worry at all about your canopy weight. You may have to start worrying when your canopy weighs more than your whole tank full with water

Thanks Chad & Jonathon,
I sort of thought so, but figured I should check before starting to build this monster.

While mixing up the water to fill my 15 gallon the first time, I rested a 10 gallon on top of the 15. All things being equal, that 15 supported the ~100 lbs with no problem.
