I clean mine often but not regularly since the growth rate can vary from week to week, and only 50% of whats on the screen, seems to do the trick

haven't seen any black, but pretty much every other colour.I was wondering if mounting a macro algae to the screen would work.

If the conditions are right in the scrubber it should seed itself with a fast growing turf algae of some type. I do not think any of the conventional macros like cheato or caulerpa would work well in a turf scrubber type application. The name really says it all: algae TURF scrubber. Since turf algae is really what you want to get growing on a massive scale here.
