You could plug that hole and make like a U shape with plumbing so the U saddles over the overflow box, then drill a hole just below the water line on the display tank side. Hopefully that makes sense.

thanks, but the problem is why they make it this way, obviously the hole won't below the water line, did they do it on purpose?

i don't think they made it that way on purpose, maybe your overflow is a little short or the fittings didn't push all the way in when glued, or some other glitch but i think the hole should be just below the water
