![]() the hole is the break the siphon if the pump stops and reduces the amount of drain back to the sump, the hole is usually just below the water level, sounds like you are getting a venturi effect drawing air into the pipe

![]() if you can remove the pipe you could plug the hole with epoxy and drill a new hole a little lower
if you can't remove the pipe you might be able to drill a new hole, make sure u use a cordless drill and underwater epoxy

![]() You could plug that hole and make like a U shape with plumbing so the U saddles over the overflow box, then drill a hole just below the water line on the display tank side. Hopefully that makes sense.
