I've had some of the same black sponge before. Coincidentally it was also on a purple mushroom rock.

black sponge was the only thing I ever noticed my Blue Linckia eating.

They are quite common. I have black, yellow, orenga, white and pink sponges growing on my liverock.

They usualy start to grow after the aquarium as matured a bit and if there are enough nutriment in the water. Zeovit Sponge Power will help them grow.

If anyone in the Vancouver wants some it has grown on to some shells in the substrate.

I've had them in my tanks for years with no issues at all. They don't seem evasive.
