You can use any compartment. I use all of mine. If you use live rock I would put peices in gradually over time as to not shock your system. I personally think the more rock in my sump the better. It acts as a natural filtration system.

Do you need the extra filtration (how's you nitrate etc)?
Though I've removed some LR fr the display and placed in my sump, advantage of leaving sump bare is it's then easy to siphon out any detritus that might build up.
