Depending on the time of your visit you should check out the George Street Festival. I think it usually happens the first week of Aug. Bands play in the street every night with the final night being Kitchen Party with all local bands.
Might also want to consider the Salmon Festival in Grand Falls, again not sure of dates. When you are in Deer Lake I would suggest driving a little further to the new resort area(name escapes me) just before Corner Brook. It is really turning into a nice area.
