I have a 150 gal. tank (48"x 30"x 24" high). I build the stand 39" high with 2x6's with no centre brace.

My stand for my new 75G frag tank 48X18X24 is built on 2X4's and 2X6's with no center brace. No problem.

I have used 2 layers of 3/4" ply doubled up (making a 1 1/2"x4" beam), screwed and glued on most stands I have built, I find it to be more dimensionally stable than solid wood stock (no warp or twist) and plenty strong. On my 180 I originally installed a center brace but did not need it as there was no deflection at all.
