building tank stand questions.
I'm in the process of building a stand for my new 65 gal tank (36x18x24 high) and was going to build the tank 40" so I can have a bit extra room for a fuge in there sump willl tank up 24" and then fuge 12" with some room then for wires and what not.
Anyways my question is if I build the tank with 2x6's would I need a center brace ? I'm trying to see if there is any way that I can keep the whole middle area open but if everyone things its needed then I can always use 2x4's and put one in the center front and back. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Cheers ! |
for my 75g sump used 2x4 and no vertical center brace.

does anyone have some stand build picks? as i want to build a new stand for my 120 but with the canopy and some storage space on the side, as 1 unit.

I have used 2 layers of 3/4" ply doubled up (making a 1 1/2"x4" beam), screwed and glued on most stands I have built, I find it to be more dimensionally stable than solid wood stock (no warp or twist) and plenty strong. On my 180 I originally installed a center brace but did not need it as there was no deflection at all.

Here is a link with some really good building tips.
Im interested in your stand because my tank has the same dimensions as yours. Please post a pic when you are done. I want to see how you do the fuge. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...readid=1169964 |
I built my 225 Gal stand out of 2x4's . i upgraded the edges strength by doubling up on them. here is my build thread http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=49037
hope it helps... Cheers JC |
WOW ! Thank you to everyone for all of the posts. I feel comfortable building one now without the center bracing. I'm also throwing th eidea around about making the stand an L shape this way putting the tank in the corner and having the smaller L part section as the fuge. Still playing around with the room and where I would like everything to go but if I go ahead with the L shaped stand it will actually give me a bit extra room for the fuge/goodies under the tank.
