Glass is harder than steel so you should be ok with steel wool- you can always test on a hidden corner to be sure. However I have found the only way to get all the scale off is to dissolve it with the water/vinegar mix and then rinse with RO water.

I use glass covers on my FW tanks.

I use a spray bottle of vinegar/water solution. I also use a commercial glass cleaner, it is a spray foam product used for car windshields, I forget what it is called but it works well.

One thing to avoid is running the glass tops through the dishwasher. I tried this and the plastic strip on the back got bent from the heat.
