Well for me, stuff opens up at night now. i.e. my green star polyps used to hid so that all you'd see is the purple base. With the moonlights, they come out at night. Plus my gobies are more active now at night. Right after the moonlights come on, they swim around the tank and explore places they usually wouldnt. The bubble coral seems happier as well.

So I dont think it's entirely a gimmick. At the very least, it makes the tank more enjoyable at night. Why else are we holding these sea creatures captive, if not for our own enjoyment, right?
