Are they fish eaters?, debating wether or not to get one for my 8' tank

bottom feeders mostly, but can take small fish, and inverts. need a good sized tank and sand bed. at least a 6' tank i would say

I can get one for really cheap but it isn't eating yet which concerns me . The smallest fish in my 8 foot tank is my 3" sand sifter.

I have been contemplating one for over a year now but chance of survival is slim and seem very difficult to care for

From all the reading I've done there's a low survivability rate on them, because they are hard to get eating. I have read that they can be force fed with a tube which will greatly increase their odds of survival. I've decided to either wait until it eats at the store or well.. Wait until it starves and then rescue it from the store.

I had one and could never get it to eat and tried to feed everything!!!!! I lived for about 2 weeks...........I would never get one again as I don't know anybody that can get them to eat in the aquarium. I would leave them in the ocean and enjoy them there if you can.

When we used to get them at lfs where I worked, I head the best luck getting them to eat by giving them a mixture of mysis, Silversides, quality flake food and selcon all ground up and put just under the sand. It seemed to encourage a natural feeding response. They would glide over the spot a few times then stop at the spot and settle on the bottom and suck it right up.

Give it a try!

Oh yeah I forgot. Use a small squeeze bulb baster to squirt the chum mixture under the sand in two or three places. It also helPs prevent the other fish from grabbing all the food!
