![]() i know copper is toxic for inverts, but i dont know how much it takes. it is hard to get good food locally. my lfs gave me an enritched spirulina flake food but it contains copper. is it safe? why would they put copper in a marine flake? thanx.

![]() yeah its kinda a PITA. thats the problem with lower quality foods to begin with, lots of stretchers and chemicals. thats why I like NLS pellets, and natural foods (home made) havent attempted home made for my SW, but my FW tank has been only fed home made food for many years

![]() Which copper ingredient are you looking at on the ingredient list? The copper added to our tanks through food is organically bound will not cause problems.
NLS also contains many copper compounds including copper sulfate a naturally occurring molecule in many vegetables. Quote:

![]() To add to this, most of the tissue we feed to our tanks contains some level of copper. Copper is required in small amounts, its when the molecule becomes present in larger concentrations that invert poisoning occurs.
And a little proof, read the copper content of 1 ounce of mixed mollusks and squid species. http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/...roducts/4197/2 Even more proof: Copper is the oxygen binding molecule in many invertebrate species hemocyanin protein (Their form our our iron dependent hemoglobin protein). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemocyanin Last edited by Zoaelite; 04-26-2012 at 11:00 PM. |
