Default Red algae

I have this red algae problem and I'm not sure what it is. I know it is not red slime. It seems to be in area of high flow. It is not thick like green hairy algae. It forms almost like a thin fuss layer on the rock. On one coral it grew where the dead tissue is and it seems to have roots spreading (1/5 mm in diameter) to the live tissue. I tried taking pictures but does not seem to work well. The spreading of these algae are almost like veins on the leaves. Do you have any idea what these are?

Thanks

sorry about the poor quality pics

Wow. They look very invasive.
Hope you get rid of them.
Lenny.

Thanh, is the algae very coarse or soft like cotton? There are a couple algaes that seems to like low nutrient systems (i.e. zeo systems).

If it is cotton like then you can try Mexican turbos as some have had success using those. If it is the coarse stuff though it may be more problematic. I've heard of some people having luck with the combo of manual removal + a sea urchin.

Regardless of what type of algae it is though, make sure you have a decent clean up crew to begin with and they should be able to help keep a lot of that stuff in check before it gets really out of hand.

looks like red cotton or red turf algae. i've had it before and it sucks because its not the easiest to rip off the rock unlike cyano which can easily be blown off. i got a couple turbo snails that got rid of it. i have heard that some rabbitfish pick at it as well but i've never tried that. in the end, the turbo snails did the trick for me, but i did have to take one rock out and hand scrub it with a knife, toothbrush and tweezers before the turbos could do their work. hope that helps.

Bad algae, kill the rock, and then scrub it. The pores last for ever.

My 90 was killed by it when it bloomed. Everything died overnight

Do a search for "red turf algae"
