how messy is it?

Hi all, it's me again

I'm reading a book by Julian Sprung and it says that splashes from a sw tank can damage the floor. How often does it happen? Can I cover it somehow to prevent it? And also it says that fish tanks placed close to the wall can damage the paint (it will bubble in a couple of years) SCARY! Is it true? If my tank (if I ever get one) does some damage to anything I'm dead!

I always have a beach towel over my shoulder. And it's sitting on hard wood flooring......

and lay a large rubber BBQ mat infront of the tank when working on it to protect the hardwood floors.

Salt water does do damage. If you live right by the ocean you will experience salt damage that makes things rust quicker than they would inland. It's the same principle here. Salt water is not friendly to things that don't live in it. You will need to be careful if that is an issue. Now that said I don't have any paint peeling or bubbling on the wall behind my tanks but the floor has seen some water on occasion. If you never have a leak or a water spill of any kind you are a minority. Salt or fresh water....accidents happens.

Keeps lotsa towels handy. Damage is done when you let the SW sit and soak in. Promptly wiping up spills (which are a fact of life) will prevent any damage.

my tank just sits on a bare concrete floor. but still clean up any spill asap

Well, we've replaced drywall, and torn up the carpet to replace with tile, nothing really major though...

Lets face it, keeping water in a glass box, unless you never touch it its gotta get out sometime. Like fkshiu said, keep towels handy and mop up spills quickly. I've never had a major problem (and I'm pretty good at getting water everywhere).

What do you mean by saying "no MAJOR problems"? How mild are they? Please be mean and honest, I want to know the truth!
