Default Corals... Ever wonder?

I was doing some long overdue fragging tonight...

While I was cutting into some really nice acan. echinata, I noticed something that made me stop and think. Ever wonder how long this 'rock' took to develop?

I was undercutting the edges of the almost flat colony, the rock it was on, was in fact layers upon layers upon layers of A. echinata skeletons. Makes ya think doesn't it?

Andy

I have thought the same thing many times, I have seen and collected numerous encrusting types that will have obviously old skeletal area showing with the living coral seeminly growing back over where it once was, makes ya wonder if, for what ever reasons, they die back and then grow again right back over once lost ground.
