Default What to do in Calgary?

I'm moving to Calgary in September, and seeing as how there are a lot of people from Calgary on Canreef I thought this might be the best place to ask.

Recommended attractions?
Recommended restaurants?
Recommended areas of town to buy a house?

Looking forward to eventually meeting some people on the board once I start another tank in the new house. I'm renting for 6 months to start. Then I'll be asking about LFS's

Thanks in advance!

Its all a matter of opinion but I'd recommend the Zoo (world renound), Calgary Tower, Glenbow museum and Heritage park (to gather some history), Prince's Island and floating down the Elbow river (for relaxation)

I'd name some clubs and restaurants but they've all probably changed names since the last time I was at them.

Buying a house in Calgary all depends on your lifestyle and transportation method. I've lifed in the central south end for a long time and love it because there is easy access to pretty much everything. The suburbs are cheeper than buying in say, Willow park or even Acadia now because of accessability issues.

Hows that?

That's great, thanks! Keep'em coming!

We hear the Southwest is booming, and will probably look at buying/building in and around there. My wife has a job at Foothills hospitol and will drive to work, but I hear the traffic isn't that bad.

Along with things to go and do, maybe thing to AVOID would also be helpful. Thanks.

If your wife is going to work at the Foothills, I recommend living in the NW. There are lots of new developments up here, and the traffic is no where near as bad as the SW.

Hey I'm in the NE .. places like Monterey Park, Coral Springs, Martindale, Saddleridge, etc... aren't bad at all. Newer communities... nice looking. Just thought I'd throw that in so your not scared of the NE or anything lol

Live in WillowPark SE and love it, but then again i only work 10 minutes away. A drive on northbound deerfoot to the foothills hospital may not be that bad at all. Then again its a matter of opinion.

Places to go....hmmm its tough once you have lived here for so long. Definitly all the places listed above. I would take a stroll down 17th Ave SW, some nice shops, pubs, restaurants and who could forget....the woman! Check out the Saddledome once the flames hit the ice again. Mcmahon stadium for a stamps game, especially against the green and white riders. Any mall in the city, well except deerfoot, pretty much all of them have had renovations. Take a stroll down the kensington area, same as 17th ave. Head down to Eau Claire and look at the shops, some nice restaurants around there. And as always the classic calgary landmark, The French Maid (Strippers) you cant come to the city without going there.

Hopefully all goes well on your move and if you have any questions....fire away.

Steve

There are really two parts to the SW. North of or south of the Glenmore resevour. If access to the Foothills is relly important than the NW is a realistic possibility......if you don't mind a chaotic road system. The Foothills was built between downtown Calgary and the enveloped town of Bowness, so the road systems are a bit crazy up there. I used to dispatch at a local cab company in town so I know the city very well. IMO the SW area just south of the Foothills is a really nice area, and the roads are dead easy to figure out.

I recommend you DIY some new clothes before moving. Something with built-in heaters and a chiller for the following day.

Living in the NE can be very entertaining if you enjoy laughing at Calgary's worst drivers (just about everbody is on there first day driving.) If you like to hike and exercise you could stretch your legs during the night by chasing people up and down the laneways after they break into your car.

I'm suggesting you look in other quadrants of the city for housing first.

Yeah I hear the weather is crazy there... but I come from the land of -50 degree with windchill weather, wet summers (at least lately), and mosquitos
