The Regal angel is still at the store after ten weeks. We have decided it is not in the best interest of the fish to ever consider him. I have offered him to a canreef friend with a well established tank and enough experience to give him the home he needs. She is thinking about it at the moment and doing her research on the fish... She already has angels and has had them for the long term.

If she declines I will offer him to another canreef friend with a well established tank. He is still safe and sound at the LFS and will not be in my tank, so people can calm down. He will be getting the best home possible.

I am glad to hear you will not be adding this fish to your reef.

Personally I never had any intention to add him to my reef... When I asked about making a case why NOT to add it, it was on behalf of making it a slam dunk as to why I did not feel right about adding him. I also expected the little trooper to be long dead to be honest. I canreef friend made mention that the regal was still at the store to my amazement.

This is why I asked about why it would not be a good idea. I guess when we write nobody can get a feel as to the tone in which we are asking the question.

I am not letting the fish go to the store and am currently trying to find a well established tank with a experienced keeper. I don't think the girl I offered him to is ready for him, so I am still looking for a home.

This little guy has lived in the store for over ten weeks. He beat bacterial and skin infections. The last thing I would do is bring him home to an uncertain future. I would never be able to live myself if he died and I know there is a big risk of that for angel species in my tank.

I know quite a few canreefers, and feel that if I put him up for adoption he will have the best chance at living a long life. If I take my store credit anybody can just buy him. I have a couple of weeks to find an appropriate home and he can stay at the store until one is found.

A good decision. Good for you. Sit back and enjoy your tank for a while, it is heavily stocked and still young. Even without adding anything else you are still going to have some uphill battles in the weeks/months to come. Sit tight and ride it out. Lots of good people here to help you out.

Your tank really needs some time to mature before you start adding more livestock to it. Asking here is a good place to start when you see something you are interested in. It would be great if you and your husband got together with a good fish book and decided on what types of fish you would like to keep, and then decide whether you want corals or not, and if so which types. Then you can put together a plan. The plan may change as you go along, but the general idea should stay the same. A tank as big as yours with no plan could turn into a large disaster, as you've already gotten a taste. Imagine making some of these mistakes 2 years down the road when you have a few thousand dollars in livestock.

I honestly never wanted angels but my husband did... if you have one, you may as well have more. My husband wants his reef tank and we spoke at great length about the direction we are going now. So far all my fish are reef safe aside of rearranging corals while I sleep. I managed to be lucky enough for my puffer to be working now. I made the mistake of buying a large mature wild fish... no kidding he would be doing the things he did in the ocean. Now he is content to swim with his fire shrimp at night and wait for his home made food.

The tangs have settled down and I am thinking the fight was over hunger. I was really late feeding them and did things backwards to the way I usually do. They are really grumpy when they are hungry...

I am hoping I don't have any uphill battles in the next few months... any insight on what this might be? I remember when the tank say cycling for over two months, watching the diatoms appear in a matter of hours... then I was told of wait until you get the hair algae... You don't know what hair algae is until you see it in your tank... then it turned brown then other stuff showed up... it never ends but if I know what to expect around the bend I at least will be ready for it.

So can you let me know whats coming up for me, so its not a surprise?

Algae will be your biggest battle in the first 12 months. One kind or another. As well as choosing compatible livestock. Getting used to dosing will be another lesson. When summer comes you may battle heat. A nasty hitchhiker will usually show up in the first 12 months if you have one.

I already have the dosing down, and make the Randys recipe. I hardly have any algae these days at all, and have no plans for livestock anymore. We live in the woods and the house is always cool, which is a wonderful thing. I already saw a big eunicide (sp) living in the pipes going to my fuge... don't know how to deal with it yet and pretend I didn't see it. The husband pretend she didn't hear me say it was there and his job is insects and dead stuff...

You shouldn't have to be dosing your tank much if at all yet. When(If) you plan to add a bunch more corals is when you will really begin to be dosing.

Algae can creep up outta nowhere, don't be thinkin that an algae free 4 month old tank is out of the woods yet!!

I would get on catching that Eunicid worm...they can wreak havoc by eating corals and/or fish.
