I don't see why you can't just remove the end overflow and cap the hole to the end overflow and use a back overflow. Am I missing something obvious?

The glass has been cut about two inches from the top for the water to flow into the overflow. The holes are for the return.

well cover it over with a piece of glass and paint the tank to be viewed from 2 or 1 side and have that side covered up with wood
