my birdsnest was also insane. it didnt fit out the top of my 4x2x2 tank with center brace without breaking brances off. i fragged him down to 'nothing'and hes atleast 7-8 big colonies worth.

That's a 55gal drum its sitting on and that's just what I tossed. I have away a bunch and kept a colony probably 12" x 8" x 4"
