James,

Tap filters not going to take out the amounts of contaminants as a RO/DI filter will. It is only one stage of filtration and usually expire quicker than the 3 stage filters do. It's like using a brita filter. They do have filters that take out contaminants to or near 0 TDS (total dissolved solids) but the cartridges are not cheap and I would imagine they expire quickly. Save your money up and get a 3 stage filter. You never know what your water will have in it otherwise.
