That is smart, imagine how many of those you can make from a 8 footer. Sell them back out for what home depot charges and you got a money maker :P

After materials, time, electricity, marketing and distribution costs, etc. it'll only end up costing him two or three dollars each even after he sells them

only if he values his own time at $1.00/hour. never cheeper doing them by hand than when they are done automated by bulk.

You can get a home bench top lathe for around $900 from Busy Bee tools. It won't have the tolerances to make engine parts or anything requiring tolerances tighter than +/- 1mil but they are fun to tinker on. You can make boxes, candlesticks, fittings, etc.
