its a chiton , not the typical one but def common

nocturnal and usually diving in and out liverock holes

completely harmless

Your picture is terrible, but to me that doesn't look at all like a Chiton. Chitons are hard and don't change shape as they move. Your pic looks like a nudibranch to me which are soft and pliable. Do a Google image search and see what you think for yourself.

Note that the spots only take up about 1/5 the length of the Chiton. The photo that the OP posted looks as though the spots cover about 1/2 the length. Maybe the photo is misleading, maybe you are right. Indeed, it looks close to the Cryptoplax sp, but it looks more to me like a similar looking nudibranch. Hopefully the OP replies regarding the texture and size of the creature.
