It changed over time and this morning I had a nitrate spike and killed a few fish.
The Rodi is brand new and have never used one before I think I may have had to run it for a bit first. I don't know where I would go to test the water. I just have the nitrates and ammonia testers

Yes, you should discard at least the first 5 gal of water. I was told there is some kind of preservative to keep the filters from growing bacteria.
