I like anything from VICE for the most part. (youtube)

I would recommend Inside North Korea (Part 1/3)

and

This is what Winning Looks Like (A documentary on Afghanistan)

though right now - I'm watching The Bible mini series

Depends on your definition of documentaries as reality shows are considered "documentaries" but I tend not to watch most american reality shows as they over sensationalize everything without telling you anything

Reality shows

Survivorman
Border Security
Alaska State troopers
CWD
To serve and protect(most consider it boring but it shows what police across Canada really face on a daily basis)
Mayday(love watching this one when I fly)

Actual documentaries

Naked science
Planet Earth series
Shark week
Lockup(msnbc)

I'll second the vote for any one of the Vice documentaries (the Nigerian oilfields episode is pretty crazy).

Some others:

Food, Inc
Coast Modern (West coast architectural style - very cool)
Jiro loves sushi
Dirt
Any of the old docs by Ray and Charles Eames (like Power of Ten - which is super trippy)

Am I the only one on the planet who barely made it through this documentary without throwing my mug at the screen? Why does everyone love this so much? Is it because of Jiro? The technicality of the piece? Sushi? Or maybe they love his charming son? What the hell is it?

Or maybe everyone just loves living vicariously... <___<

I wouldn't go to Jiro's restaurant but I always wanted to go to el Bulli. That place was like Narnia for foodies.

Yes, I agree with you on this one. I did feel that way at times. It's certainly on the drier side of documentaries amd takes sushi to a snobby level.

I think for me, being the ultra-precise, anal retentive perfectionist that I am, and also being a great lover of food/amateur chef, loved the technical degrees that they would go to at times in search of perfection. I understand the thought process and approach, so I found it fascinating. I'm also the person who has the handmade set of japanese knives that get sharpened on the waterstones every two weeks and loves watching bad-assed knife work.

My brother, on the other hand, is none of those things and, so when he watched it with me, he really didn't enjoy it.

But ya, I've seen more titillating docs than that one. I only listed it because I watched it on the plane last night and it was on my mind.

Here's a man I can respect

I had a couple Bob Kramer originals six or seven years ago... Until someone broke into my house, smashed my fish tank and stole my knives (and all of my electronics). I've never lamented the other losses, but the knives... I still have anxiety attacks over that mostly because I know I'll never spend that sort of money on cutlery every again
