Yow those are big fellas! One good thing is no one was injured or worse. Property damage can usually be put right, hopefully your insurance will help in that regard.

A few years after I moved to Vernon, I had to take down a birch tree that was rotting away. It was an old one too, triple trunks, one was still showing a bit of life. It was very close to the neighbour's property and I was getting concerned that it may come down & injure one of their grandkids who often visited & played around in their front yard. Generally the prevailing winds here are from the west, which in this case is good 'cause strong gusts would through rotten branches into my yard instead of the neighbour's, but one of the dead trunks had a definite lean to the east, so I was getting a bit nervous. Although I split a lot firewood as a kid, I'm by no means what could be considered a lumberjack. But I went out & bought a cheap electric chainsaw & proceeded to go about felling the rotten thing. First I climbed as high as I dared & topped it, then drove an anchor into the ground east of the trunk I was taking down, attached a rope to ensure it dropped in the direction I intended & had at 'er. The other two trunks came down in a similar fashion. One of them leaned towards the house, the other was fairly straight. Worked like a charm except a nice Japanese Maple I had planted a couple years before got split in two by one of the falling trunks! It's actually made a nice recovery though.

For some reason two more trees on the other side of the front yard started declining within the next couple of years as well, a pine & a spruce. Not sure, but looks like some sort of bug in both cases. I felt bad since one of my other hobbies is Bonsai & I know a little bit about trees, doing plenty of research to keep the mini trees in pots healthy. Anyhow, same idea with those two, I topped them best as I could & roped them to ensure they fell in the desired direction.

So yeah, I guess a friendly reminder to those with large trees on their property. If they're not looking healthy & have the potential to do some damage when (not if) they come down, you might want to take some preventive measures before disaster hits.

Could have been worse.

Power turned back on at 2pm today, lost all my fw fish and 2 clowns and 2 cardinals
