Securing eggcrate on top of tank.
I'l be covering my tank with eggcrate, has anyone found a nice way to secure this to the top of the tank, I'm looking to hold it firmly in place to keep fish from jumping out, but I'd like a nice neat look to the top of the tank. I don't want to weight it down with anything because this would block out the lights.
Also the same question about gutter-guard covers for overflows, what is a simple way to hold them in place? |

1. How is it a pain, do you mean removing it and replacing it all the time, I was thinking I'd cut out a square in one spot for feeding. 2. If I remove it then how do I stop jumpers? |

Yes, the feeding thing, plus you are just going to need to get in there and move stuff, etc. That just seems to be the way it ends up. I used egg crate for a while after I lost a jumper, but the frustration and scratches on my arms were too much for me. If it makes you feel better, then by all means do it.
What fish are you getting that are jumpers do you figure? |

I thought any fish would jump, if I end up going for a six-line wrasse they would especially jump too.
So do you have an open-top tank with no jumping problems? By the way my FW planted tank had a school of 8 marble hatchetfish for the better part of a year, when the heat wave struck 5 of them jumped out the tiniest hole in the cover. |

I agree with Deb, I personally hate putting any kind of lid or top on the aquarium, simply because its a pain to move out of the way everytime you want to do something. water always collect on the lid or on the eggcrate, I end up spilling saltwater that collected on the lid everywhere. I do agree that fish do like to jump or go for a suntan, for example one of my sixline wrasse. My wife kicks me everytime for not putting a lid on, but do I ever listen? Fish will always find a hole somewhere and still manage to jump. Regards Ken

A six line has been in my tank for approx 3 years without a canopy or cover. Yet it has taken the water slide to the sump once so far. I figure things like aggresive tank mates or unsuitable conditions may cause them to jump. Also, covers will screw up your lighting.

Hatchetfish are natural jumpers I wouldn't trust any available hole in the lid with them....

I put eggcrate over my tank when I picked up a firefish.Like Deb said it was a PITA.The firefish was so skittish it would jump anytime someone
even moved in the room.It was so small it would fit through the squares of the eggcrate,after picking it up off the floor a couple of times it finaly jumped when I wasn't home and that was the end of the fish and the eggcrate. I only had him a week  I dont know if all firefish are this jumpy,I'd like to get another but dont want it to happen again.
