Default Hi all, First post

Hi, its good se another another canadian forum. I usually post on a UK and one from the states. Anyway, My tank has been up for about 10 months now and I am adding 2 175 watt MH's tonite, with a berlin turbo next week or the week after(soon as it comes in the mail) For lighting I also have 4 40 watt actinic tubes, 2 18k and 2 20 k. I will be having 1 6.5k mh and a sunburst. This should hopefully give me a good range of color temp. My tank is 90 gallons 48(length) by 24(deep) by 18(front to back).

My inhabitents are 1 Naso Tang, 1 Maroon Clown, 1 Yellow Tang, 2 green chromis, 70 pounds of LR, buncha snails, worms, crabs and weird little creepy crawler swimmer things. I also run a 20 gallon sump/refuge with a DSB on reverse lighting with 20 watt flow grostrip light, to balance PH.

My question is since I'll be getting my first few corals in the nest month or so. Are there any I should shy away from due to not enough light or whatever other reason?

I'll leave a picture I of my tank. bTW I am big into DIY, ALl ighting, sump and stand is DIY.

Overall tank

The bulk of my fish load, chromis were too fast

Hi,

Welcome to the board !

IMHO, most soft and LPS corals will be happy in your tank. SPS corals will probably need more light to be happy.

BTW, I am not sure if the second picture is an optical illusion or something, but it looks like bright red patches of stuff on your rocks. Of course, it could be red coraline, but it could also be cyano. If it is indeed cyano, IMHO, I would hold off on coral purchases until the cyano problem is resolved.

Looks like a happy tank since you have quite a bit of purple coraline. I really like the look of your DIY stand and canopy.

- Victor.

Is that a domed viewing pane on the side of your stand? Pretty cool!
I think most corals will be fine with that lighting, with the most light demanding being placed closer to the top.

Default Hi all, First post

Thanks guys,

I have about 4 shades of coraline algea, Dark Purple, light Purple, Red and some Orange. Haven't had cyno for about 4 months now so I think I am ok there.

The cabinet was lots of work. It has 4 locking cabinets(a must with kids) The ballasts are located un the tank the sump is in the left cabinet the one above the tank opens to feed, The top shelf also lifts up to access lights.

The port hole was actually a brass fan shroud that I mounted with screws from the inside. I got the shroud for 2.00 and local junk store. It gives it a neat nautical look. My daughter loves to peek in that hole. When your looking through it it almost seems like your in a submarine looking out into the ocean, thats kinda the look I was going for. I can't wait to mount the 175s I got I am off the store right now to pick up some misc screws and such. I'll post a before and after shot of the MH lighting.

Default Hi all, First post

Jedi, I think if you run a 12K on one side and a 65K on the other, you will get a contrasting difference in the two sides of the tank.

At least mine did. I ended up running a 400w 12K in the center, with a 175w 10K on each side. That gave me the nicest colour.

If I may offer my opinion, as you already have 4 actinics running, a pair of 175 watt 10K German bulbs, in combination with the actinics, would give the the colour, par, and best bang for the buck. The German 10K bulbs are some of the best on the market, in the 175 watt version. I would not hesitate using them for 18 months, myself.

Yes I was looking at the color and I was figuring when I replace these bulbs I'll buy a pair of 10k's
