Question... once the po4 is bound, does it still show up on a test like the milwaukee photometer?

No it does not. The bound phosphate is inert. I use a Lamotte photometer to check Phosphates and it does not register.

Cheers,
Tim

Hi,

The purpose of Foz Down was to reduce the cost and work associated with removing Phosphates.

Seems like more work than GFO.
The reason people want to use filter socks with the Foz Down is the fear that the bound phosphate will be released back into the system. I have never heard of this happening nor have I heard of an experiment to test the theory.

If you would rather not use filter socks then that is your decision. It won't effect your system in a negative way if you don't. I have used Foz Down with out filter socks for several years with no ill effects.

Cheers,
Tim

This sounds like a great solution but I do not use filter socks either.

So I understand I can still use this product - but how do I export the bound phosphate from my system? Or do I have to? Will the skimmer not eventually take it out or will it all settle to the bottom of my sump and create a different cleaning chore?

thanks for your assistance with these questions - it's always great to get the expert's take on things so we can make an informed decision.

My skimmer will export some of it and the rest I have never worried about. I have not noticed a build up in the sump other than from detritus etc.

Glad to be able to help. When people have an easier and more successful time with their reef aquariums it benefits everyone and helps the hobby to grow.

I still learn new things in this hobby so I don't consider myself an expert. I had my first saltwater tank in the late 1970's so I have seen a lot of things come and go and technology change. This is what Foz Down represents is a technology advancement. Phosphate control started with water changes, then Algal Turf Scrubbing, then Aluminum Oxide, then Granular Ferric Oxide, then Carbon dosing and now there is Foz Down, an instant Phosphate binder.

Hope that answers your questions and if you need advice on your specific application feel free to PM me.

Cheers,
Tim

And when will this be available in Edmonton? (BWA or Marine Aquaria)
