Rubber bands have a tendency to slowly cut through Sarcophyton. I've often had them let go in two pieces before they began to encrust so now I use fishing line with much better results.

I fragged one once during a water change siphon. I accidentally tore a chunk right off so I tossed it back in and it floated to the back, anchored and grew from there.
