What is the ideal immersion depth of this skimmer?

The website says 8-9 inches but I have run it's low as 6" and a high as high as 10 1/2"

Is this Gen 1 or 2? - how old?, still under warrranty?

It's a gen 2 I've had it for about 3 years so I'm assuming no warranty (I don't actually know what the warranty is sorry)
I replaced the impeller about 6 months ago.
