Home depot sells 5gal buckets for $3.75. Otherwise, stick your head in at a Costco Food Court. They throw out 5gal buckets like they are going out of style.

Another place for free buckets is a local taper/drywaller. Many of them buy mud in buckets, that's where I get my extra's.
