Sounds like air intake partial clog.

I thought of the air intake pluggage... but when I put my finger over it the level DROPS.

I guess I'll have to rip it apart and give it a good cleaning when I get home. I checked all of the obvious spots to be restricted and saw nothing though.

That is opposite of what my skimmer does!!

My skimmer overflowed when my tank was newish
When I put my finger over the air intake, the level dropped just like yours

I did a 20% waterchange and it calmed down
