thanks for the reply scubadawg, I know my friend is a photographer and she has the Nikon D90 and suggests that over the d3100 or others I listed I have found one used for $600 with 2 lenses 4 batteries charger case etc with 12k shots it looks like a pretty nice unit, and at 12k shots it should be a few years before the shutter has to be replaced

IF you can budget $700.00 I would buy the Nikon D3200 with lens, this is what I would buy. Comes in Red or Black, the newer cameras have better low light shooting, I can shoot ISO 6400 with my D700, that looks like my D200 at ISO 800 or 400, Remember this is brand new with warranty, and you will have this camera for a few years.
I have no choice but to keep my D200's, they fit in my underwater camera housing for scuba diving, I would love to buy a new housing, but that's about $5000.00 for new housing plus ports and gears.

Don't let the D3200's compact size and price fool you—packed inside this easy-to-use HD-SLR is serious Nikon power: a 24.2 MP DX-format CMOS sensor that excels in any light, EXPEED 3 image-processing for fast operation and creative in-camera effects, Full HD (1080p) movie recording, in-camera tutorials and much more. What does this mean for you? Simply stunning photos and videos in any setting. And now, with Nikon's optional Wireless Mobile Adapter, you can share those masterpieces instantly with your Smartphone or tablet!

lol is that a sales pitch

I dunno, My budget is about $600 ATM. Sold the FW tank so I can budget the $350 from that plus the extra $250. So I am between the D90 used with 12k shots or a new D3100 for $50 less

I have played a bit with both and they are both really easy cameras just dont know how much camera I need for Shooting the tank and everyday crap.

D90 is one of the best DX format bodies you can get. I've seen a few lightly used ones sell for $500. There are lots of the "lens kit" lenses kicking around for sale as well, usually very cheap at $100-$200 or so. These are the ones like the 18-70, 18-135, 18-55 and so on. I would go this route over the D3100. 12K shutter count BTW is not very high when it's designed for 150K +, I doubt you'll ever use it up. $600 for what you've listed sounds like a smoking deal.

However keep in mind a macro lens is going to cost you over $500 so if that's your main intention you might want to consider a cheaper used body like a D80 or even D70s.

I would buy the D3100 over the D90, newer camera better sensor, etc.
When I bought the D700, 3 years ago, it was 3000.00, and when I bought the D800 last week, it's $3000.00 also, but with 3X the pixels 12 meg vs 36 meg, plus HDV video. The D800 will be my last camera for at least 5 years now.

The D90 is 4 years old now. My D200 is 7 years old now, I only use it for underwater. Can't justify a new housing for the D800, it's tempting

http://www.bluewaterphotostore.com/sea-and-sea-mdx-d800

I have all the ports and gears for it, but it's probably going to land in at 3600.00-3800.00, then what do I do with 2 Nikon D200 bodies.
And I have 2 underwater housing for the D200.

My friend has a D70's, he ordered a D3200 body, I originally had a D70, then sold it to friend when I bought the D200's, are you interested in a D70s body?

I called him, he's going to keep the D70s as a backup SLR

so after some careful consideration, of the fact that I already have a great video camera, I will be going with the D3000 which is basically the D3100 with out the video camera and slightly lower mega pixels. only $349 right now too, so I can get a macro lens or telephoto lens for hunting season
