its not too bad actually, mine is 12" above my tank, the lenses seem to keep most of the light in the tank and not in your face, mines right beside my couch too

so 3 would be good at 12inchs above tank, even with my centerbrace?

might be ok, but you might get a bit of shadow from the brace, hard to say. some have done only 2 on a 4 footer, but 3 or 4 allows more room for sps i think
