I think that one of the points Richard Harker makes pretty clearly in this article is that Dr Ron doesn't really follow repeatable scientific methods. There is another recent article by Richard Harker in Marine Fish and Reef called "Benefits of Sand Beds" that argues that DSBs are not all they are cracked up to be. The article is is well supported by previous research and demonstrates that 70-90% of denitrification occurs in the first centimeter of sand and similarily 80% of organisms are found in the first 2 inches of sand so it seems the DSB theory is not well supported by other research either.
