How often did you have to do a water change? Also i found when using the edge for fresh water, top offs were minimal.

YOUTUBE! Lots of really nice Edge nanos on there and a lot of people go into detail on the mods they have made to the tank

I did a partial water change every 1-2 weeks (it varied). Due to the small tank size i was able to keep the nitrates very low with a 25% water change (less than 10ppm). As for the top off, you will most likely have to do this daily. If you dont mind putting in the extra work it makes a neat looking reef.
