I like to make a wall around the hole with plumbers putty then fill it with water. I also tape the otherside so the water stays in there till the hole is complete.
And put a towel inside the tank so the plug dosent knock the other payne of glass out

i like the 2x4 method the best, keep water flowing in and out and takes away the glass residue

I wish my clamps looked like that.... Mine are all covered in tacks cuts and stray arcs LOL
