ok.....your mistake was not in how you tested the second time(follow the instructions).....it was going to Pisces for saltwater advice
 ....there is only a couple people that work there that have any idea about saltwater tanks....

While the tests are not super accurate, you should follow the directions. They don't tell you to shake it for that long for nothing... there are other tests in the API kit that don't require any shaking and Nitrate is not one of them.

As they say "do what it says on the tin" do you have any fish buddies that you can get them to check for you? If in doubt there are companies out there that you can send water tests to and they will send you the results. Hope that helps. Good luck.
