at 20 bucks or so per sock doesnt really seem very economical

Huh? $20? They are way less than that and you can wash them out repeatedly before they wear out.

Filter socks should be about $10 each, and are fully reusable by washing in the washing machine without soaps. Probably your best bet for getting the jellies.

However, these bugs you're seeing sound like pods. There are many different kinds.

when i first started the tank and wanted to clear up the water from the sand i went and bought a sock from the LFS and they charged me like 18.99 for it. used it for 3 days, tried to clean it and could never get it clean so i threw it away.

ebay for 6.99 each... big als also has them for 2 filter sock refills for $19.99... ive just been throwing them in the wash when i have about 10 dirty ones and they come out WHITE like new

put a wrasse in the tank......that will take care of most pod type critters....

You can bleach filter socks too. You just have to dry thoroughly before use so the chlorine will off-gas.
