Canada
Main article: Family Day (Canada)

Nearly 60% of Canadians observe a statutory holiday on the third Monday of February. The holiday is called Family Day in three provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario), Louis Riel Day in Manitoba, and Islander Day in Prince Edward Island. There is no federally-established Family Day.

Family Day is unrelated to National Family Week, a campaign put on each October by the Canadian Association of Family Resource Programs, a non-profit organization. It is not a statutory holiday, but is generally recognized and celebrated by community organizations across the country.

This holiday was first observed in Alberta in 1990, followed by Saskatchewan in 2007 and Ontario in 2008.

Ok I am going to play devil's advocate here. As an employer I hate stat holidays, just another day I have to pay someone not to be working at my shop. I get taxed to death and as far as I am concerned I want to bring back the good ol days when if you didn't work you didn't get paid....and people wonder why the economy is so screwed up.

As a business owner myself, I can see your point. I think as business owners, we should get some perks from the government, in order to pass these perks to the employee. For example paid stat holidays. I do think we all get taxed too much.

As I am in Alberta, I got the family day holiday... If I was an employee, yup I would want it... But as an employer, what does family day have to do with things? If the government wants us to spend time with our families, then as an employer I would want them to pay for it.

continuing the hijack...

just because you're in Alberta doesn't mean you get family day. I don't as a Fed and usually I have to take a holiday to look after the kid since no school (and don't get me going about all the days I need to take off every time the teacher gets a development day)

Actually you are incorrect... In 2007 Family Day in alberta was declared/recognized a statutory holiday. So this is actually a paid holiday in Alberta, can't say for the other provinces though. So if you are a fed in Alberta, technically you are entitled to the day off with pay.

Here is a link explaining Stat holidays in Alberta: http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/labour/la..._alberta.shtml
