properly tune a skimmer - how to?!

I ran either one of those, or a MD100RLT on my 4' beckett (can't recall which it was), but I couldn't hear the TV anymore

Iwaki makes a good pump but they're noisy all right. That's why mine is in a closet. Can't hear a thing.
