If you want it to kill what is in your tank you will have to leave it empty for 8 weeks. Others options out there to kill it in the water column as copper, ozone and uv. Don't use copper if you want inverts as it will stay in your system. I find feeding good quality food soaked in garlic and vitamins with good quality water they should recover. Good Luck

how do you know the Ich wasnt present in your tank and then when you introduced stressed fish to it it just manifested?

well sounds like this stuff is gonna happen no matter what.
I only have 5 fish in the tank right now, i could try to get them all out for 8 weeks but it could come back when I add a new fish. So even if I feed with garlic soak foods the stuff sticks around? Fish just are able to handle it better? |

All fish have Ich in them when you buy them.
If its just a few specks, most likely the fish will fight it off with a little help by us (garlic, higher temp, lower salinty, etc). The best way to insure that your new arrival doesn't affect other fish is a QT tank for 4 weeks (Ich has a life cycle from 6-28 days). Most store won't take back a sick fish, but will do their best to help you solve the problem. Just because a store says they QT a fish for 2 weeks doesn't mean they are 100% healthy as the Ich may still be present. We get deliveries 3 times a week, and I would never be able to QT my tanks for 30 days at a stretch, I wouldn't have space for it. We do our best though, making sure they are eating, and aleviating stress. Ken - BWA |

I know it is easier said then done.
Cheapest/best thing to do is set up a QT tank and use it for all new fish. Yes, it is a hassle. Yes, it limits you to a fish or two. You may have got off easy though by just introducing ick, sometimes it can be way worse. Last edited by Leah; 06-18-2010 at 07:36 PM. |

I was wondering if I was just lucky having never seen evidence of it in any of my tanks or fish.
