This disease is not contagious, it happens due to poor nutrient that fish intake. I believe The fish does not get enough veg in his diet due to frozen food that he is getting. I think it can be reverse with healthy diet. Maybe someone with better knowledge can chip in

If the case isn't to severe you should be good to go, just power feeding a nice mixed diet rich in selcon/ garlic soaked green's is required.

I feed with Formula One pellet, PE Mysis and Veg flake at different times of the day. So I am sure I could bring it back. The wife is interested in the boxfish, is it a spotted boxfish?
