I had a Remora and it was ok. I'd suggest that you go onto the "Reef" forum and post a question there. Be as specific as you can about what your setup will likely be. For example, indicate how large your tank and sump (if using) will be (total water volume is important). Also, while you may not know just yet, try and indicate what kind of livestock you hope to keep (and how many of what). the bio load on the tank will dictate to a large degree what kind and size of skimmer would be best suited. Consider buying used; it'll save you money and you'll likely want to change whatever you buy within a year anyhow as you learn more !

For the live rock/sand, keep an eye on the For Sale sections (skimmers can be found there too !). LOTS of stuff goes up on there each week and if you're a little patient you can get good deals. Feel free to post a wanted or "Looking For:" ad as well. Be sure to check the location of the poster as not everyone is in Calgary !

I share the same experience moving from fresh to salt water. Before start to buy the skimmer i think you should make sure you want to use your current tank. Because for me, if i got a chance to do it over again, i would have my tank drilled (my current tank is drilled but my first sw tank was not) so i can hide everything from display tank except powerheads.

I used to have aqua medic turbofloto skimmer but for the price you pay, I would go for some BM from Oceanic but they are not HOB, thus you need a sum :-)

Hey all,

Thank you for the warm welcome and suggestions. Just to give you guys/gals a better idea. I am actually just using my 65 (non drilled) tank. I figure i would just use it to learn how to keep a saltwater tank.

My basement is 50% complete. Once its done, I will be getting Elite to build a big tank (48x30x26) Pre drilled, with sump. Then I can slowly get it cycled and then slowly move everything from my upstairs office to my basement tank.

Does that sound like a good plan?

Since I am using my non drilled 65, I am just going to use my eheim packed with live rock, live rock in the tank and some powerheads for flow. Once I have the skimmer installed, I am hoping to keep some smaller fish. My ultimate goal would be a porcupine puffer (baby)

What is a better way to cycle a tank? live rock cycle with a cycle fish?

I was just at riverfront today to return some medicine, and checked out their SW section. There was a super cute baby porc (1.5 to 2.5 inches) but the poor thing was dead.
