Depending on the species it very well could be that they have never seen sand before. Astraea in particular are not from sandy areas and never developed an ability to right themselves up if they fall over into the sand.

Just turbo,s. My tank was bare up until a couple weeks ago, so they grazed on the bottom glass. Now they are at a loss there.
