I would actually advise against either of the options offered so far. Neither the eBay or diy units suggested have what would be considered moisture resistant end caps. I'd be hesitant to install either of them over a tank full of water long term.

I'd recommend something with water resistant/proof endcaps such as the Hagen GLO T5 retrofit kit. There are others I'm sure. Looks to me like for around $200 you could build a pretty good system, here's a link to get you started, just the first thing I came up with when I googled Hagen GLO T5HO retrofit:

I ended up wiring up my own DIY system using Fulham Workhorse 8 ballasts stripped out of an older fixture. Purchased waterproof endcaps, individual reflectors and voila. But the Hagen kits seem to come with most everything you need to get you set up fairly quickly.

If I can't find anything I'm just going to buy a 2x24w Hagen Glo fixture. I have the 2x39w fixture already, and it's a decent little fixture where maximum output isn't of huge importance. The Hagen Glo fixtures are over-priced (like everything else in those box stores) though imo, so that sucks.

I'm not really interested in a retrofit. The tank it is going over is trimless, and trophy shaped, so a sleek look is important. I don't need much light...just Zoas, Palys, and a few of my LPS that are having troubles in my reef due to low nutrients. I have too many corals on the sand (keeping them away from light) in my reef, so I'm not able to keep good flow in some places. Time for reef renos.

Have you taken a look at the aquatic life fixtures?

I realize you are in SK but you should be able to get one shipped out to you. I picked up one from a dealer here in the GTA for about $110/cdn including bulbs.

Also coralife makes one (I prefer the aquatic life one though)..

If you want the names of the dealers ive seen them at let me know.

Good luck,

adam
