Also decided today that I am not going the canopy route. I will be going to the ceiling with some shelves above the light.

You could always do a Crown molding surround that sits on the top of the tank, but is open on top ... and then carry the pattern on the shelves. It would make a nice tie-in between the tank & shelves.
